When we first traveled to Walt Disney World, I packed every single day with all the things. I had an Excel worksheet planned down to the minute. Yes, we got a lot done — and I have the photos to prove it — but did we actually appreciate those experiences in the moment? Did we pause long enough to change “the plan” if we weren’t feeling another ride? Pretty sure we didn’t.
Now, when I plan our Walt Disney World trips, it’s about enjoying each moment and creating space to change our minds about what we thought we wanted. We don’t wander in without a plan — you simply can’t do Disney that way — but the plan serves us, not the other way around.
These days, I start by asking how I want to feel on the trip and how I want to remember those feelings when I leave.
Am I craving a day that starts and ends with my favorite ride?
Am I excited to try new restaurants and map out the best way to hop between resorts?
Am I dreaming of a fireworks moment that feels like pure magic?
Every one of those experiences requires planning — but also flexibility, intention, and room for joy. And the same is true for the other kinds of travel we design.
